Whitefly Control

Whitefly control is a major challenge for horticultural farmers across Kenya. These tiny, moth-like insects suck sap from the undersides of leaves, weakening the plant and spreading devastating viral diseases. If you see a “cloud” of white insects when you shake your plants, you need to act immediately to save your yield.

Target Crops and Damage Symptoms

To achieve effective whitefly control, monitor these common host crops for early signs of damage:

  • Tomatoes: Upward leaf curling, stunted growth, and transmission of Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus (TYLCV).

  • French Beans: Presence of black “Sooty Mold” on sticky honeydew and reduced pod quality.

  • Cucurbits: “Silver leaf” symptoms in squash and general yellowing in watermelons and cucumbers.

  • Roses & Ornamentals: Reduced flower aesthetic value and stunted shoots in greenhouse environments.

Prevention and Whitefly Control

Whiteflies are harder to kill once they reach high numbers. Use these prevention strategies:

  • Yellow Sticky Traps: Use yellow traps to monitor the arrival of adults in your field. Whiteflies are naturally attracted to the color yellow.

  • Weed Management: Clear weeds around your field, as they act as “alternative hosts” where whiteflies hide and breed.

  • Insect Nets: In greenhouses, use fine mesh netting to prevent adults from flying in.

  • Field Sanitation: Remove and burn plants showing signs of virus (curled, yellow leaves) to stop the spread.

Kenagro Recommended Solutions

For professional whitefly control, Kenagro Suppliers Ltd offers systemic and biological solutions that target both the adults and the nymphs:

  • Acetak Top 700WG: Use 2.5g per 20L of water. This is our premier high-performance systemic insecticide. It penetrates the leaf rapidly to protect new growth and provides a fast knockdown of whiteflies and aphids.

  • Acetak 200SL: Mix 10ml per 20L of water. This systemic solution is ideal for roses and tomatoes, moving through the plant to reach pests feeding on hidden leaf undersides.

  • Alfatox 100EC: Apply 10ml to 15ml per 20L of water. A synthetic pyrethroid that provides rapid contact action, making it perfect for reducing large swarms of adult whiteflies at the onset of infestation.

  • Bio-Mat 13SL: Use 20ml per 20L of water. A biological insecticide (Matrine) that is excellent for integrated pest management (IPM), controlling whiteflies and spider mites without harsh chemical residues.
